ALWAYS BUY A COMPLETE PACKAGE OF REST

As I was going through the articles on the current topic, ‘Rest and Relaxation’ I found people have mostly covered all areas or especially talked about Relaxation. But I have something very important to impart to you all about the word Rest.

Rest is a very comforting and soothing word. Whenever we get to hear that word our mind forms a very comfortable picture of ourselves.

The web dictionary defines it as:

No.1 – “cease work or movement in order to relax, sleep, or recover strength.”

No.2 – “be placed or supported so as to stay in a specified position.”

The Hebrew word of Rest is nuach”. The meaning of which can be the following:

to rest, settle down and remain, to repose, have rest, be quiet, to cause to rest, give rest to, make quiet, cause to alight, to lay or set down, deposit.

Rest or Nuach is actually the mixture of all the above words or phrases.

I find three very crucial components to explain this word Rest. They are as follows:

Physical Implication of Rest: This is actually what we understand by the word ‘Rest’ in this materialistic world. After a day’s hard labour when we come back home and lay our whole body’s weight on a sofa or bed we call it REST. Falling asleep is also understood as rest or resting. Physical rest is very important for us to renew our strength. Our body cannot work like a machine without stopping. We all need rest physically.

Sometimes we need to rest some of our body parts like resting our hands or legs or eyes. Today, Pradita urged me to take rest by closing my eyes and keeping the phone aside ;). My wife works like a machine and she literally fills the gaps by doing something else whenever she gets little time after a certain work. I used to literally shout at her for doing so as that makes her tired and restless at the end of the day. If we look around, people are tirelessly working for money without taking care of their physical body though the physical labor has decreased considerably after machines coming into the picture.

Even the Bible talks about God asking humans to rest after a 6-day work in the week. Physical rest is very important.

Mental and Emotional Implication of Rest: So many times we get tired of life because of the pain, trauma, depression, divorces, heart breaks, death, etc… that we go through and we search for comfort. That comfort is what we call Mental or Emotional Rest. So many times I feel restless even after a night’s sleep. Why? Because my mind has so many things to deal with or so many hurts to tackle that it never allowed my complete being to come to a point of comfort or rest.

A tight hug, few comforting and encouraging words, a listening ear, an empathetic heart brings a restless mind to a point of rest and comfort. Emotional and mental rest is absolutely a top priority requirement as our MIND controls both our body and soul (spirit). So a mind at peace and rest is of utmost importance.

Spiritual Implication of Rest: Now this part is a bit tricky and difficult to understand but equally important as the other two aspects of rest. As we are created with body, mind and soul we need to keep our focus on all three aspects of our whole/complete being. 

Death is the word for Spiritual Rest when we finish our journey here on this earth. But alas, what is that death or rest which leads to hell eternally! A death is a rest in truest sense when we are assured of our eternal destiny or we will be going to  heaven after death. Otherwise it’s not a rest at all instead of being restless eternally.

Belief in God and His saving act confirms our entry to heaven through the gateway of death as a saint says, “as for me to die is gain”. 

Friends! Rest is important in our life. Mental and Spiritual rest are more important than our physical rest. We have to acknowledge this at some point of our life. The sooner, the better. 

Do not forget to ask the complete package of REST from the Almighty God as He says:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

MUSIC AND RAIN – MY RELAXANTS

15th November 2014, the eventful day when my child was born – the day we cherish, love and celebrate. It was the day when I finally bid farewell to a life of rest and relaxation. From that day till now, work had been the main part of my day’s schedule. It was not only me but also my mother-in-law who worked all day. My mother-in-law was a banker then. She had a fixed time of work. Her tight schedule always kept her on her toes and kept her busy. Her mode of relaxation was a long drive along the river bank, or a short visit to her sister’s place or a movie night. For rest, she loved to come over to which ever state we lived in for the holidays. I too had similar ways to relax which included a late night drive across the deserted streets, a light mood chat with my mother or husband, playing, cooking, art and watching movies. I used to write poems and stories at times, and was appreciated by many friends and family members.

Those now are the ‘fancy stuffs’ I long for. I hardly get time to even sit. Well, these are usual things that happen to everyone. Male or Female, we all long for our comfort zones where we can rest or relax. Recently, I realized that music and rain are the two things that relax me the most. Whenever I feel down, or agitated or unwilling to have any conversation, I switch on the music. I zone out while working and I find peace. Its a way back to sanity and happiness in my life. Music has always had a calming effect on me. Maybe it is very genetic, but I never knew it could fill me with such tranquility. 

Same with rains! I do not get to feel the water on me but still the smell, the wind, the cooling effect, and just the feeling of rain clouds over me is so thrilling and make me the happiest. Even if its gloomy, dirty and muddy for many, its love for some too.

Though things as such are rarities in life, I try to fill in some of them to my daily schedule. They really pump up my energy and fill me with an urge to work more efficiently. Rest is an utmost requirement of our body. Less of it and our body will tire more and we would age more faster. With the adequate amount of rest and relaxation, our body will be able to work efficiently and keep us away from illness by fighting disease causing agents. Like a machine, which requires a shutdown for a particular amount of time to work more efficiently, our body too requires a shutdown. A complete sleep, a short nap, a relaxing spa time, a perfect massage, a warm bath, a 20-mins walk, a soulful conversation, laughing to the heart’s content can give our body a restart for better functioning.

The soul will also rejoice the flow of energy. Let us also be thoughtful and live a little for our own self. Let us prepare to make memories for a longer period, by keeping our body, mind and heart healthy. Because as happiness is self-made, so are rest and relaxation.

Life is all about balance. You don’t always need to be getting stuff done. Sometimes its perfectly okay, and absolutely necessary, to shut down, kick back and do nothing.                                                                                                                – Lori Deschene

REST, RELAX AND RESTART

Do you frequently try to cover those dark circles of yours with make-up? Think again . . .

No brand of make-up can vouch to remove dark circles completely, no matter how aggressive the advertising may be. Yes, they sure play good concealers. But once you remove those layers of make-up and stare at your stressed face in the mirror, don’t you wish that the made-up face stayed with you at all times concealing those dark circles and the puffed up eyes?

Most of us, be it homemakers, those in the corporate / government sectors, those managing business empires, even students burning the midnight oil – lack adequate rest. Ask the mother of a new born baby and she’ll tell you what it is to stay awake by nights (when the baby is active as if the sun has just risen) and still get up in the morning to manage other household chores while the baby is fast asleep!

Well, the bottom line of it all is that no matter what our age or profession may be, we all get worked up. The grim truth is that we can’t do away with our packed-up schedules ever. But, it is in our hands to find the time to rest and relax. It is an undeniable fact of life that the happier and relaxed a person is, the effective the secretion of the growth hormones and neurotransmitters and hence the greater the longevity. Stress, tension and overloaded work schedules inhibit active secretion of the hormones and neurotransmitters and thus decrease the life-span.

Adequate rest and fruitful relaxation refresh the brain cells and prepare it for further productive work. If you wish to increase your work output, take rest, relax and then restart – don’t push your body beyond its God-tuned rhythm.

Family and work are important parts of life, but not life itself. So, it is wise to find time to rest and relax for some time each day, apart from the occasional planned vacations – so that you present your best self to the world. For some rest and relaxation may mean just to flop down on the bed and sink into a deep sleep, for others it may be to sketch, paint, sing, dance, sew, play, write, read, cook, design, browse, get a massage done, and the list goes on.

Many young and budding individuals are seen to committing suicides, getting into extra-marital affairs or addictions as they find their brains too overworked, with no way out. Don’t kill yourself. Kill your stress.

 

 

WHAT IS REST FOR YOU?

I have too many To-do lists for different times of the day and different activities. So, what are all types of “To Do” lists that I have on my phone (using various different apps) . . .

There is a To do list of household chores for each day. This is an obvious one – I think all women have it if not on the phone then in their heads – List of household never-ending chores.

There is another one for office work. Of course that is needed to keep things in structure at work.

There is yet another important one that contains the list of things I have to do on my commute to and from work. It takes me about 1.5 hours to reach work and that is an important time that can be used quite well. This list contains items like ordering online gifts or groceries, writing articles for Candles, sleeping, watching movies, checking emails and replying to some, talking/chatting on phone with few people, read news etc.

These 3 hours in bus are totally a “Me-time” for me. This is the only time I get to do things that matter to me. Of course, it is not very convenient to do all this in a bus – but if you know Bangalore traffic, you would know that this traffic really crawls. So rash driving is not really a problem.

Relaxation doesn’t always mean vacations. It could be a small time out as well. Something that you just do because you like it. Doing things that you are passionate about can be very relaxing.

There are days when I am so stressed out mentally that I have no energy to think anymore. However, my physical energy is too high, it is so high that I am not tired physically to sleep but mentally I just want to rest. This is what is called a restless sleep. At this time, all that is needed is to match the energy levels of your physical and mental self. In this situation – I hit the gym. And that is rest for me. Because my physical body works out and my mind gets to rest just listening to music. It is a huge stress buster for me after a bad day at work. Once I come back from gym – I am all ready to sleep peacefully.

Definition of rest is different for different people. But it is important to know what is rest for you. If you do not know – life can be extremely difficult.

My 2 year old son is not mature enough to understand that he is sleepy when he really is sleepy. He is so interested in playing that he resists sleep till he has even an ounce of energy left. But playing in a sleepy state is also not enjoyable for him. He is cranky, doesn’t like his toys, cries every now and then, starts hitting others – all this because he simply doesn’t realize that all he needs to do is to close his eyes and rest.

This happens to adults also when they don’t realize that if they take a restful break – life will be much better. Make sure you identify what is relaxing for you and you fill the voids in your day with that activity. It doesn’t matter if it is sleeping, watching TV, listening to music, going for a walk etc. Don’t judge yourself about what you do during this time. Just be yourself and take enough rest and relaxation so that you return to your life feeling more motivated and productive.

REST, RELAX AND BE THANKFUL

What a perfect time to write about Rest and Relaxation! Summer vacations have just ended for a few and have just begun for a few. This is the time when almost everyone takes time out for some or the other form of relaxation.

But why do we need such time? Have you ever noticed? – If the computer is behaving erratically or if the Wi-Fi is down, and it seems the modem is not working. The first bit of advice that we get is switch it off count till 10 and switch it on again. And 90% of the time it works. The following quote explains the whole thing.

Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… Including you. – Anne Lammot

We are all busy making something out of our life for it to mean something. We get involved in it so much that at times we forget to give ourselves a break. And stress of our daily life mounts on us. That is where rest and relaxation comes in. So, my dear friends never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.

Is there a difference between rest and relaxation? Yes, even if we take a few minutes off from some strenuous work it is resting. Sleeping is resting. It gives our body some time to rejuvenate. We have all studied in Biology our body uses the sleeping time to rebuild. Many illnesses like body aches and pains and mild fever etc. are cured by a good night’s sleep.

Wherein relaxation is like meditation. It helps us unwind our mind, reduce the stress, pressure, anxiety etc. Many a times it is possible to rest without relaxing. When people have difficulty sleeping, or are restless during their sleep it is because their mind is so wound up and knotted that they are not able to relax or let go.

Coming back to our work after proper rest and relaxation increases our work potential and the quality of our output. Like they say ‘A field that has rested gives bountiful crop’.

Going on an exotic vacation is an obvious way to relax. Seeing new places, meeting new people and having different experiences gives our mind a perfect way to break out of our monotonous routine and stress of our daily life. But it is not always possible to get enough leave from work or afford an expensive getaway.

So, what are the other means to relax? I would personally recommend that we should have a regular relaxation routine instead of depending only on our annual vacations. It should be something that so completely occupies your mind that there is no space left for our niggling worries and tensions.

Playing a sport is one such activity. Because we need to concentrate so much on our game we tend to block out all other thoughts from our mind. So, playing while being an excellent exercise for our body becomes a very relaxing activity for our mind.

Same is the case with music. Singing or listening to music or playing an instrument also has a very calming effect on us. All the agitation or stress inside us just flows out of our body.

There are many other such activities. Like any kind of hobby, taking a walk in the greens, getting a massage, even doing social worketc. etc. I would look forward to hear from you all what is the most relaxing activity that you do.

Different things work for different people. For example, I hate spending time in the kitchen. I spend only the bare minimum time in kitchen that is required for cooking the daily food. But for my mom – in – law…she loves cooking and making different dishes. So, what is stressful for me is a very relaxing activity for her.

Look around and find the activity that makes you forget all your worries when you are at it. And make it a part of your regular routine.

If nothing else works the most tried and tested one is meditation and prayer. Be thankful for the things you have and give your worries to God, blank out your mind and start with a clean slate.

BEST SLEEPING POSITIONS TO AVOID SLEEP DEPRIVATION

We had a great week on the most talked aspect of life: “Sleep” and it was a very fun filled and informative week. Yesterday we saw Dr. Anupam spoke about the time we waste spending on sleep only which ultimately make us unproductive.  And tonight I will talk about “our sleeping positions & patterns” which might end this week with little more fun. 

I was reading an article by  Melanie Curtin. She states, “A human being will actually die of sleep deprivation before starvation–it takes about two weeks to starve, but only 10 days to die if you go without sleep.” This implies how important is sleep in our life.

But I was quite amused to read her this line when she says, “Those who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases that include hypertension, diabetes, depression, obesity, and cancer. It’s thus vital to get enough shuteye, but it turns out your sleep position also has a significant impact on the quality of rest you get.”

So a good sleeping position is also important for a good rest.

My Mom says when I was born I was found sleeping with my one leg up on the other like a “Nawab” (Moughal King). Wish I have a picture of that… But I don’t have. 😦

Yeah yeah I know you find it funny… Now stop giggling… 😉

Actually, I have seen many people sleeping like this. Even one of my cousin brother also sleeps like this with his mouth opening a bit especially when he is fast asleep. We always tease him for that. 

CXPYWT_2372416kSome people sleep lay straight on their back and sleep flat like my wife sleeps. I really can not sleep like that at all. I feel breathless. I can sleep for sometime like that but not for more than 10 minutes.

For some people positions doesn’t matter. They can sleep anywhere at any positions. Like my Dad, he can sleep literally in any position and anywhere. One of colleagues is the same. I had taken a number of pictures of him during the office hours.

On a serious note I just want to conclude my article mentioning about the right position of  sleeping according to the neuroscientists. 

sleeping-couple-160426Neuroscientists emphasize that sleep reenergizes the cells of our body, aids in memory and new learning, and clears waste from the brain. Clearing wastes from the brain being the most important among all other.

Sleeping on our side’ is the most helpful of all sleeping positions in regards to clearing out waste from the brain… that’s what a neuroscience study suggested.

Melanie ends her article by quoting the neuroscientists and experts as under:

Sleeping on your side is good for more than just optimal brain functioning. It’s helpful for those prone to snoring, those with obstructive sleep apnea, neck and back pain, and for pregnant women. The position elongates the spine, which helps with back pain, and mechanically opens the oropharynx, which can help with breathing.

For best results, sleep experts, chiropractors, and physical therapists recommend the following:

  1. Lie on your side, but not in the fetal position. (Some bending of the knees is fine, just not all the way up)
  2. Use an ergonomic pillow under your head, thick enough that your neck is supported
  3. Place a small pillow between your legs, such that your spine stays straight

Then, count sheep. 

So friends! Start practicing to sleep enough without distractions, but don’t sleep too much to be called as lazy and unproductive and don’t forget the right position of sleeping: “Sleep on your side” to get the best out of your sleep.
