THANK GOD!! MY LEGS ARE STILL INTACT 😜

I am a fearless person when it comes to adventure. My father used to warn me many times when I had to go for sports tournaments or bicycling tournaments with the same sentence every time, “Do not attempt any feats.. please“.. Such was my interest in doing different stunts.. Jumping from the top of water tanks (12 – 15 feet), running down slopes that are made of rocks, stand on the window shade of the top floor of our school building, walk on the roadside parapet wall overlooking a steep valley, I can go on with a big list.

Several times I got wounded. Most of my summer holidays were spent in hospital or at the least making rounds to the hospital for dressing of the wounds. There was one incident, that has changed the way I thought. Many of you in India may have used or seen a teak cot. The double cot in our home is made of teak, a type of wood considered very strong and durable. One day, me and my sister were playing a game which required us to jump from over the head board of the bed. I am pretty sure I would have invented that game only because I wanted to jump :p In the process of jumping, or should I say playing (LOL), my leg hit the head board, right in between of the knee and ankle. It was a very small bruise. There was not much of pain either.

4 or 5 days after this incident, I started to experience pain, followed by swelling. I kept this to myself for a couple more days thinking it would subside on it’s own. Well, no, it came to a stage that I could not put on my school shoes. My father noticed this and as usual performed his duty of taking me to the hospital. The doctor said the wound is infected and covered it with some medicine and bandage. She said we should come back the next day for dressing and she would attempt to remove the puss. The next day when she opened the dressing, there was a fist sized perforation which was red. She started with the puss removal process. It was quite painful and lasted for more than an hour. She dressed my wound again and asked me to come back after 3 days for dressing.

This puss removal and dressing cycle continued for 3 more rounds but the doctor could not understand why the puss formation wasn’t reducing even after the medication. We got an X-ray done and there it was, a tiny piece of wood in my muscle. She cut open the wound and removed the piece of wood. Are you wondering what changed me? The simple ritual of using the restroom at home took as long as 20 minutes, to get off the bed, drag myself on the floor because I couldn’t walk because of the pain, then a struggle to hold whatever I can so that I can get up and do what’s needed and get back to the bed. My parents are very caring, but come on.. I cannot ask them to help me use the restroom because I wanted to try a crazy act of jumping off the bed. I felt ashamed as that situation of mine, it aroused because of my ‘adventures’.. All of this is mischief as a child but a lesson learnt to be very careful while having fun.

So, should I stop trying anything new? I keep doing adventures even now, I tried sky diving when I was injured. Somehow adventure brings life into me. Usually when I am going to attempt an adventure, there are two kinds of feelings in me. The first one, of course the excitement and the second one, the fear.. What if, this adventure leaves me disabled physically or even mentally? It is extremely difficult to find someone who can care without criticizing me or I might end up spending my entire life cursing myself for attempting it. Weird feeling I must agree. All of our body parts are very important, but mobility gives us freedom. I lived without using my hands, my eyes, my mouth, my legs etc (substantial injuries you know :D), out of all these lacking mobility was difficult to manage. When we can balance our body on our legs and move forward everything seems a little simpler or so I feel..

I use my legs a lot. I usually stand in all my meetings at office unless the organiser wants me to sit. One of my colleagues used to joke that some day I might get varicose veins.. Of late, I have become very lazy and uninterested in exercising making by body unfit especially my legs. I realised it after practising Bhangra (a Punjabi dance form) for couple of days. I could hardly move my legs for four days post the practice sessions. This motivated me to start going to gym again. You notice the fear? I told the trainer I would come back when I get fit enough to attempt tough Bhangra steps 🙂

Mobility is an important part of our day to day life. If we imagine our life without legs or even decreased mobility as per norm, we would notice that it takes two to three times the time to move from one place to another. Compared to a normal person, an amputee or a physically disabled person would have to invest time to plan their commute, considering the places they have to be and also the extra time that would be needed. A sore knee can set us back by a good amount of time. Please take good care of your legs. My mom says, several glands and organs of our body are connected to our legs. If we maintain healthy legs, then automatically our body would be healthy.

FINAL WORDS – HANDS AND FEET

Let me stir up your sense of imagination with the final words for this week’s topic. Imagine a life without hands and feet. Yes, please do close your eyes and imagine looking at yourself in the mirror sans your hands and feet. What would your immediate reaction be? Shock, bewilderment, helplessness, grief, crashing dreams??

If by just visualizing our own selves without our hands and feet we feel so much despair, spare a thought about hundreds of people whose hopes are crashed because some person somewhere chose to use his / her healthy hands and feet against them! So disheartening.

Nobel Peace Prize recipient (1952) Albert Schweitzer chose to leave his homeland and travel to the dense African countries to spread the message of love by using his hands to treat the natives suffering of various sicknesses ranging from malaria, dysentery, fevers, sores to leprosy amidst fears of cannibalism.

Mother Teresa, another Nobel Peace Prize recipient responded to God’s calling and left her homeland to make India her home and spread the message of peace and love – picking up people from the streets and tending to them with comforting hands.

Florence Nightingale chose to use her hands to nurse the wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. Her exemplary dedication created a revolution in the world of nursing.

Here are people who chose to use their hands and feet to bring hope where there was despair, to bring love where there was hatred, to spread light where there was darkness. The only thing that put them at a place where they are the world’s who’s who today is that they chose right over wrong.

This calls for a self-check. Whose life have you touched with your hands and feet?

Imagining ourselves without hands and feet is so difficult. But Nick Vujicic born without hands and feet travels across the globe spreading the message of love, compassion and hope. ‘Born without limbs & without limits!’ – reads his tag line. One of the ways he reaches out to the wounded hearts is by giving them warm hugs (yes, you read it right…hugging without arms!!)

As we go along life’s journey, let’s choose to touch the lives of others with our God-gifted hands and feet. And today, if you are rendering yourself incapacitated owing to absence or loss of limbs, remember you can still make a huge difference to many around.

PURGATION OF THE MIND

We generally do not associate pleasure or happiness with Doomsday. We use the term often when we refer to a day where a virtual execution may take place. By which, I mean a day where we are to receive some form of thrashing or the day of our examinations or a presentation day in case of working persons etc.

Throughout the week, especially after reading the Mega article we have come across agents that lead us to doom and the ways in which we can overcome them. One prominent feature that struck me was the involvement of the mind in bringing about destruction to oneself and others. I would agree with the writer in her saying that all sorts of actions bringing about destruction have its source in the mind.

Our mind is a web where we weave ideas and thoughts and execute them into actions. No wonder the human mind is still a prominent subject of research and study in today’s world. Psychologists come up with novel theories regarding the functioning of the human mind. However, no one but the Creator Himself knows how and to what depths the human mind works . There is no limit to our thoughts and it can lead from a particular one to a different one in a matter of seconds.

But, to enhance our abilities that differentiate us from animals and baser creatures, we need to distinguish between fruitful and harmful thoughts. There is a very fine line between instinctive action and decisive action and we often commit the mistake of confusing one with the other. I feel the actions that bring about doom are downright instinctive. Let us direct our instincts to the achievement of necessary objects. But then also, we have come across people who commit crimes to eat one meal a day.

Therefore, I feel purgation of the mind is very necessary, which can come about when we associate ourselves with the divine power of the Almighty who is not a transcendental God but is very close to us and is seeking for a relationship with His best creation.

I too have and oftentimes come across destructive thoughts causing harm to myself as well as others. These included building up a wall around so strong that none could penetrate it and isolating me from the world. But as a resolution I practiced going back to the Almighty with a guilty heart and this resulted in the purgation of my mind. This creates a mental immune system so tough that even the most toxic thoughts are cleansed of their impurities. I found that through this recovery process, the values of endurance and faith have gradually enhanced.

The scripture offers a powerhouse of such values that transforms the mind of the destructive individual. Memorization of practical proverbs needs to be done on a daily basis as we are subjected to toxic thoughts regularly. It’s called the power of the spoken word. The more you utter positive verses the more they get imprinted into your mind. Trust me when I say, you will understand the difference.

If this still does not convince you, let me inspire you with St. Paul’s transformation from the Slayer Saul to the Preacher Paul. This was brought about by the same Word of God that continues to strengthen me through my struggles.

Therefore, my friends let us look towards all that, which spells love, peace, unity, justice, holiness and cleanses the mind of the impurities. Let us learn to live the life of a Diamond.

PURITY OF A CHILD’S HANDS

Hands are pure when the heart is pure; heart is pure when thoughts are pure.

There is a famous story of thief and his mother –

A thief once gets caught while stealing and is put behind the bars. His mother comes to meet him and he asks his mother “Why did you do this to me?” Mother shocked asks, “What did I do?” The thief says, “When I was a little boy in school and I used to get those fancy pencils and tiffin boxes from school, why did you never ask me where those came from? Why did you never question the stuff that I had? I continued to steal from school, then from people travelling in public transport and I never made any attempts to hide what I stole from people, yet you never questioned me or scolded me. Why?

Mother had no answer. Whatever her reason was for not stopping her child from stealing, it led to the destruction of the child’s life.  He grew up believing that it is ok to steal. He believed that his mother approved of what he did and he got all the more motivated to steal.

That is how children are. Whether a child has pure hands or impure hands depends on the parents to a large extent. And so as adults, it becomes even larger responsibility to express the purity of our thoughts and hands; to show our children that we have steady feet and that is the only way to live.

I often hear stories where father asks the child to lie for him to neighbors or mothers or somebody else. How horrible is that? Just for a very short term benefit of lying, they end up teaching the children a very wrong value which is to lie. And lying is an impure thought which leads to an impure action.

So, watch your thoughts and watch your actions. Your children will be your reflection when they grow up.

YOUTH : VESSELS OF HOPE

Ask a potter and he will tell you… the fire does not create the vessel, it just completes it, makes it stronger. The real beauty of the creation is when he moulds it, takes a lump of clay and transforms it into a useful product. It’s the perfect example of our youthful days. This is the moulding stage of life, where our life is transformed into a thing beauty. The lessons we learn, the actions we take are directly proportional to the kind of future we will have, and it’s very important that we remember that we were created for a purpose, His purpose. We were moulded by our creator to become a vessel of hope for the world around. We have a responsibility towards our society. Our youthful days are when we tune in to the world around us. People have a wrong perception that our youthful days are just to educate oneself and to decide what we need to do next in our lives, and though the thought holds true, it’s not all. This is the time for youths like us to take responsibility to increase the standards of the society, not only financially but culturally too. We are plagued by so many serious issues that its not even funny. Corruption, Honour Killings, Domestic violence, Rapes, Riots…. The list is endless. But I think the mother of all issues is our self centeredness. We are not able to look beyond our problems. We do raise our voices, but for all the wrong reasons. We are ready fight, but do not know what we are fighting for. And we believe violence is the only solution which is so far from the truth.

There is proverb from the Bible that has always appealed to me,

“Remember your creator in the days of your youth.”

It’s an apt verse I think. We are at a good stage of our lives, these are the days where we need to remember that we wonderfully and fearfully made by God in his image to glorify him through our thoughts and actions. If we remember that, we can change the world in a better way , so that we can improve the evils of the past and make way for a brighter future.

“HELPING OTHERS” – IS A GREAT WAY TO USE OUR FEET AND HANDS

I just want to give a small thought on this week’s topic.

Whenever somebody talks about their anxieties and worries and how worthless they feel, after listening to them well I always suggest them to do one particular thing which I would like to share here.

I always ask them to ‘help others.’ Because helping others is a great stress buster. I want to quote a scripture portion which says,

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Using our feet and hands for helping others has such a beautiful effect on our life that we can’t even imagine.

Keep reading and keep sending us feedback.

“PURE HANDS” – WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN?

My uncle always talks about keeping our hands clean before the men and the Almighty.

What that can be? What are the things that makes our hands dirty?

Let’s pause a moment and list down one by one thinking about our daily lives.

“Bribe,” receiving it or giving away… both makes our hands unclean. Even law says both are equally unlawful or wrong.

People have accepted it very easily with a terminology, “Processing Fees.” How easily we accept wrong things these days!

Why do we do that? Because we only think of our own self. We see only ourselves and rob others’ share, others’ opportunity by bribing.

Keep thinking about it as we discuss more on this topic the whole week.

Stay Blessed!!!
