HAIL THE MEDIA

Encyclopedia and Wikipedia are the wholesome twosome,

That tickle minds in ways so awesome.

The international, national and local dailies,

Reach out to people merrily or wearily.

Live broadcast of sixers or bouncers,

Greedy in-laws who are sly pouncers,

Plane hijacks or illegally hoarded onion sacks,

Refuge crises and the killer seismics,

Create ripples in all circles.

Deprivation, Devastation or the programmes for Immunization,

Pollution, Corruption or Mass Frustration,

Forecast of raging cyclones and the birth of new clones,

Stupendous athletic feats and exposing big cheats,

Give rise to opinions bittersweet.

Regular newsfeeds and crafty tweets,

Keep channels on the heat.

Opinion polls and crimes on roll,

Stir up the human mind and soul.

Big and small scams on people’s faces slam,

A picture of reality behind the masked morality.

How detached the globe would’ve been,

Had so much been left unheard and unseen!

The media definitely is a big boon,

Which lets us know all things very soon.

Information and commerce,

It does aggressively endorse,

Reaching the masses without absolute remorse.

A responsible pillar of knowledge dissemination,

The media at times is wily in its articulation.

So hail the media and those behind it,

We nail those opposed to free permit.

May the voice of people reign on high,

And the banner of democracy freely fly.

3 IGNORED TRUTHS OF 21ST CENTURY MEDIA

The 18th century is the advent age of media. Since then the work of Indian media is remarkable. As the days went by media industry took new contours and today India is globally recognized for its media power. In India, Media is considered as the Sight, Sound and Voice of People. In our country every day 100 million copies of newspapers are sold, from 690 satellite channels, more than 80 are news channels and apart from this p-media (print media) and b-media (broadcast media), the o-media (online media) works like wild-fire. Every Indian kid above 10 yrs of age has a glimpse of what is happening in times today. And all these numbers and statistics clearly portrays ‘how active media is in bringing all issues, big and small into limelight!’

Apart from the entire statistics, the call of media is ‘to bring the truth to the people”.  Media stands for two things “TRUTH” and “PEOPLE”. The lifeline of the entire universe is also “Satyamev Jayate !”. Truth needs People to survive and People need Truth to survive ! But in this 21st Century media has mostly fallen down from its call. In this 16th year of 21st century Media is more concern to TRP (Television Rating Point); Money-making; Market Competition; Glamour; Yellow Journalism, Politics; so on and so forth. Censorship is more on “Truth” and “People” rather than all sort of fabricated stories. Every media agents ask for one thing – “MASALA”, not for the sake of Truth but for TRP. In the blockbuster film “PK” when Jaggu (Jagat Janani) introduces PK to “Jerry – the pictured News head”, she says if we will bring Tapaswi and PK front to front, our TRP will increase and that’s what most of our media story is today.

Now the big question is, “WHY MEDIA HAS DRIFTED AWAY FROM ITS CALL? Today, every individual’s plea to media is, don’t ignore the 3 central truths of your call!

  1. Intent must be prior to Content:- Every word that we convey has an intention behind it. There is nothing called random ! Nowadays there is frequent divergence between Intent and Content in media stories. Which ought not to be ! Most of the media presentations are politicized with party politics, every statement that is flashed is in favor of some political party. Yes, every good work must be appreciated but that must not become the means of upliftment/buttering. Mostly media contents portray the promotional picture of the ruling party.

Every media agents must be PEOPLE intention and TRUTH contented !

  1. Stand for TRUTH:- Media agents name their programs/presentations with sellable words like “Sach Ka Samna”; “Aap ki Adalat” and much more but where is the change? Do we truly present “SACH (Truth)” for the cause of “AAP (People)”? or again some more well-dressed lies with flamboyant masala!

Today we bring censorship on Truth, let not that day appear when we will find censorship on our Rights !

  1. Remember, People trusts you:- While conveying some news to our friends we often quote “arre, you don’t know! This has come on media.” This simple line expresses the trust level we people have on media. People trust media because they consider media, “as their ears to listen to their plea; as their eyes to listen what is happening behind the curtains, and as their mouth to speak for them”. In short, if it is good enough to be on TV, it is good enough to be true.

My two questions for media is:-

  • Does Media have the guts to say, ‘yes, we have obeyed our call (bringing the Truth, before the People)’?
  • Can Media prove itself today, ‘yes, we are the Ears, Eyes and Mouth of People’?

Keep thinking!

CHOOSE YOUR MEDIA…

I stopped reading the newspaper long time back. With the news full of scams, murders, rapes and corruption, it makes me feel helpless and resigned. “Nothing can change this country” – we say and get on with our daily routines. This feeling of resignation makes us blind. It makes us somebody who is only ready to blame and not take any responsibility. It makes us blame the authorities, government, neighbors, schools, colleges and youngsters – basically everybody other than the people living under our own houses.

It is very easy to sit at home, watch news the whole day and read newspaper which is anyways full of negativity and blame the government. It is not very easy to take up an issue that our society is struggling with today and make it a mission of your life. Fight it with all your might – like a soldier protecting his nation.

Few years back, when Aamir Khan (renowned Bollywood actor) premiered the show named – Satyamev Jayate, I was touched to the depths of my heart. The first episode was about female infanticide and feticide – a major problem in this country. I cried my heart out imagining how many girls are killed every day, either as an infant or in the womb.

Satyamev Jayate is not about the problems in our society, it is not about finger-pointing and blaming the authorities. It is about looking for a solution at the ground level. The way this team has got the heroes of this country in limelight, it gives a huge inspiration to each one of the viewers.

To believe in the fact that “change is possible”! Yes, there are burning issues but the solutions are also available. In a country of 1 billion people, even if 10% of us take up a cause and a mission to bring about a change, corrupt politicians will be weakened.

I don’t read the newspaper at all. I rather subscribe to Facebook pages of the organizations and individuals who have taken up the mission to bring about the change. They give me much more hope and motivation to continue my own mission. I am not interested in reading about scams, murders and rapes; I am more interested in reading about heroes of this country who never come into a limelight of media.

I was so surprised to know that somebody named “Kailash Satyarthi” from our own land won the Nobel Peace prize 2014. I had never heard of him, never knew what sort of a mission he had taken up till he was honored with Nobel Prize. Why our media never recognizes such heroes? How come a common person of India (like me) didn’t know about this great person and his work? And I am sure there are many more like him who is just working without seeking any selfish returns. Let us get those heroes to limelight.

What is it that you choose to read/watch – Inspiration or hopelessness??

SOCIAL OR ANTI-SOCIAL?

Facebook Death ! Twitter Suicide ! MySpace Murder ! YouTube Killing ! Sounds bizarre I know. What have such negative words got to do with social media platforms ? They are made for entertainment, for communication, for connecting, for interaction. They are definitely supposed to enrich our lives making us more social and more popular.

Unfortunately, this is just a myth, the truth is somewhat different. Can you believe that a crime is reported on FB every 40 minutes ? Facebook was referred in investigations of murder, rape, child sex, offenses, assault, kidnap, death threats, witness intimidation, and fraud.

  1. A normal teenager of 15 murdered his dad when the father banned the kid from using MySpace, the reason being the kid was posting suicidal notes. After the murder, he removed his father from his Top 8.
  2. A guy was frustrated from his x wife and her attacking Facebook posts, made out of anger about his child support payments. He became aggressive and beat her up using a hammer, doing every painful act to his x wife and left her body which was discovered the next day.
  3. Two childhood friends, both aged 22 were best mates before the arrival of one girl who made these two buddies fall for her. They exchanged heated arguments on Twitter for some days because of this girl and due to the impact one of the friends shot down his best friend and Tweeting immediately after that “RIP MY FRIEND”.

These are merely several instances, there are so various crimes taking place that prove teenagers and youngsters are driven by social media in a morbid way. I read such stories and wonder why status on FB and Tweets have become an ego issue for us. They are just done for fun, what is there to take them so seriously that you decide to end a life, be it yours or theirs ?

Not just deaths by murder but bullying that leads to self-destruction is an equally worrisome issue. Today all kids have PC and a good bandwidth internet connection. But dounnamed-1 we identify how and for what they are using them ? They could easily be using to harass that best friend who visits your home often from a fake ID they made just to stroke ego.

Ever heard the term “Death by Selfie” ? No ? Well, let me tell you it is something that is plaguing social media today. We all like to change DP, we wanna use the one where we look cutest, sweetest, sexiest, and what not. But has it ever come to you that it could lead you to Death? We all know about the Pakistani girl, Qandeel Baloch famous as “Pakistan’s Kim Kardashian”. She is famous for posting provocative selfie’s and videos of herself on social networks. That is how she reached the heights of fame. But she also reached gates of destruction when her brother killed her, after repeatedly warning her to stop posting embarrassing stuff on FB. She was killed by him in rage, in the name of Honour Killing.

Cyberbullicide is the term used to define suicide due to having indirect or direct experiences with online aggression.  Cyber bullying and cyber harassment are two prevalent ways to lead to pro-suicide behavior. Phoebe Prince, a recent Irish immigrant, hanged herself after nearly three months of routine torment by students at Her High School, via text message, and through the social networking site, Facebook.

Social media platforms, such as chat rooms, blogging Web sites (e.g., Tumblr, Reddit), video sites (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo), social networking sites (e.g., Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Google+), picture sharing sites (e.g., Pinterest, Instagram) as well as e-mail, text messaging, and video chat, have transformed traditional methods of communication by allowing the instantaneous and interactive sharing of information created and controlled by individuals, groups, organizations, and governments. But that does not mean we will use them as a source to spy on family and friends. Relationship status is not meant to hurt other by changing them back to being single. Our Display Pictures don’t need to make us look like Katrina Kaif or Scarlett Johansson. Friends and Ex’s whom you aren’t comfortable with mustn’t be bullied but Unfriended and blocked. Troublemakers should be dealt with prudence, report them. Last but not the least, never spread rumors on social platforms.

Be Social, not Anti-Social !

MEDIA – THE MASQUERADE

We live in a fair instant world where everything is easily accessible, may it be a letter from a friend or the hidden agenda of plotters. Media has filled those long gaps with its ‘sovereign’ rule all over the world. It has acted as an unstoppable boon to communicate the thoughts of common man to the higher authorities and vice versa. But with all the perks it has brought, there are some inevitable curses it hasn’t failed to bestow upon us!

In this magically fast world, the kids have become smarter than their elders. They know of things and stuff which they aren’t supposed to know at that tender age. They are growing up in a world where vulgarity is the norm of the broad minders- the classy ones, and the poor innocent ones are mocked for being way too timid. Babies these days are literally born with an account in social media. The danger arises when the kid starts handling the account at a pre-age and learns of things beyond what his mentality can take. He grows up with that and unknowingly, the actions practiced in the dark become completely normal for him which if I were to describe religiously, I would call it ‘sin’.

Fake has become the new trend. People are heading towards it not necessarily in their conscious mind because the media has made it appear more like the ‘basic component’ of surviving in this present world. Youth compete to look better and they do so with the help of various editing apps which conceals their authentic appearance. We look up to the far stretched wings of media as our ‘godmother’ and it is leading us to the path of ultimate destruction.

Movies, TV shows inspire people more than anything. No matter whatever the theme be, messages of jealousy, anger, fight, quarrel, hatred and so on are transmitted subtly and displayed in a manner where it isn’t awe-inspiring as in cinemas, rather emptying the world of its peace and harmony. The media is actually breeding a generation of inhumane.

Time would be short if I were to describe it all one by one. But apart from all these, I believe the world would be restored to its former glory of authenticity and peace if the media would fold its wings in certain areas. And of course, until that problem is fixed, we should be careful to choose what we imbibe from the media!

WHOSE FREEDOM IS RUINING THE PURPOSE ??

Media is one of the biggest stake holders in maintaining public relations. I say public relations because, we are connected to each other very closely only because of media. It brings the entire world’s information under one umbrella and let’s us communicate, empower and engage in the best for the society..

We are greatly dependent on media to keep us on track with what’s happening around us. None of us have time to keep an eye on everything that’s happening and media plays the role of bringing us the best they can, at least that is how it is supposed to be. Media is not an exception for competition. In order to compete with other news channels/media sometimes, they show an interest to telecast some things that has no relevance to common man. But, hold on, they have to make the news interesting, so they do add a lot of gossip around it, without which they won’t be getting the TRP that is required for them.

The biggest reason for this is freedom :

Media freedom: Media has all the freedom to publish and promote whatever they want to. So, they use this power to telecast what they think is right.

Our freedom: We too have all the freedom to watch what we want to watch. How wisely are we using our knowledge to be choosing what we watch ?

Being a couch potato and watching whatever that’s showcased on the running television channel is only going to waste our time and would highly impact the correctness of our thoughts. These gossips can altogether alter our thought process, as they say, in order to induce a false thought the best way is to repeat it.

Let’s not alone put the ball in media’s court. As they shall be responsible about what’s telecasted, we shall be equally responsible about what we consider to be good for us.

Ultimately the purpose of media is to educate, entertain, drive the latest technology trends, information sharing. We should respect the purpose of media and use it the way it has to be. Instead of having a blind faith on the media, use your diligence to arrive at consensus of what’s good and useful.

Be thankful for the media for the efforts they put to expose many scams, the wrong doings people or even celebrities are involved in, life stories of people whom we idolise. Their job is more tougher than what we can even imagine, let’s help them by indicating what we love to watch, rather than leaving that to their guess work (of course they are good at it).. Let’s do our bit and then wait for theirs !!

BEING RESPONSIBLE IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF MEDIA

Hello Everyone,

Media is powerful, media can build fortunes and at the same time can bring the curtains downs on an empire.  What is Media at first place?

Definition of media:

Communication channels through which news, entertainment, education, data, or promotional messages are disseminated. Media includes every broadcasting and narrowcasting medium such as newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, billboards, direct mail, telephone, fax, and internet. Media is the plural of medium and can take a plural or singular verb, depending on the sense intended (Source: Businessdictionary.com)

The definition of media shows its importance in the society.  It is a medium of communication that could be effectively used to create awareness, bring about a change, realise dreams, inspire thoughts, put forth the truth and everything in the wake of giving rise to positivity and spreading it across the life of an individual and society there on.

Going by the power media has and what it could do I want to bring forth certain illustrations which stand  as a mirror to how media has played an influential role:

  • Remember the 1999 Jessica Lal murder case?  Had it not been the push of media, victim’s family might have ended up just hoping against the hope.  Media not only grabbed the eyeballs but made sure justice is delivered.
  • Talking about awareness media is pushing its limits to reach masses be it polio vaccination campaigns or Swachch Bharat campaign.  Number of polio effected children has declined rapidly and more and more people getting involved in cleanliness drive prove the incredible role that media has played.
  • When I said realisation of dreams I am referring to that sector of media that gives budding talents a chance to showcase their skills.  It might be a platform of a reality show or a column’s space in a magazine.  The best I see though is KBC (who wants to be a millionaire) which rewards sheer knowledge☺.
  • When the role of media as a tool to inspire (be it a thought or a generation altogether) is inspected in detail the best example that pops up in my mind is that of Mr.Anna Hazare (revolutionary).  Putting aside the word of mouth, had not been highlighted by the media was it possible for his message to fight for truth and a corruption free country to reach each and every citizen of a country of 120 billion?
  • On a lighter note how can we forget the trends that not only received adulation but following too from die-hard fans.

Media apart from bringing about a change brings in pay cheques as well for those who are a part of it.  Be it any form of media (television, cinema, magazines, billboard and so on) provides employment to n-number of skilled/unskilled professionals.  So media is not just a source of communication but income too.

Having said and seen a lot about how media is an influential, integral part of our (democratic) society it is really important to understand that presence of a responsible media is indispensable for the uplift of the image of the country.  In this context there are certain things that need to be dealt with an iron hand.

  • Yellow journalism should be done away with.  In order to sell more number of newspaper copies or to get highest TRPs the relevant bodies of media try to sensationalize every bit of news (even if it is not meant to be).  In fact they feed on rumours, exaggeration, scandal mongering.  They are going to the extent of creating need if there isn’t any only to be the talk of the town. For example a pet dog of an actress is ill, it’s a news (sensational, mind you!). Time and again pictures of the pet along with the owner are shown with a tragic music running in background with a caption ” actress is in deep trauma these days”.  You would know the reason and truth only if you watch it. This is a technique to grab attention which is unethical and unprofessional at the word go.
  • Showcasing a human as an object: Human, I am talking about in this context is “woman”.  I fail to understand what is the need to show a woman dancing around in an advertisement  which is meant for promoting men’s product.  Be it a shavin cream, undergarments, men’s wear etc.  The portrayal of a woman as “item” in songs, to show women running for a man by the intoxication of his perfume or just because he is chewing or smoking tobacco of a particular brand is very derogatory.  It sends across a false notion.  Many people among audience form a perception that woman is just an object of desire.  I mean it, it happens.  And it is harmful for the society.
  • Publicising lives:  I understand that lives of celebrities are always under the radar of public eye. And media is a connecting pin between public and celebrities.  But does that give right to cross the line and step into private space of celebrities?  Aren’t they human like us? Don’t they deserve some private moments away from the shutter bugs? Paparazzi is a new age word given to stalking of celebrities by media literally everywhere , invading the personal space which is morally wrong.
  • Promoting clichés like fair is beautiful or handsome, loans are meant for marriage of daughters and education of sons, slim and fit would be more welcomed is totally unacceptable.

Conclusion:  Media is eye and an eye opener for public as through media it sees what’s happening around.  Media is the mouthpiece of nation, through media opinions are voiced.  Media is ear as it is the receptor of facts, concerns, emotions that matters. Ok, I won’t do the anatomy further😀 but all I want to say is being an important part of state machinery it is the responsibility of media to be responsible especially in a democratic country like ours where lot of faith have been resting in this powerful weapon called “Media”.
