LIVE YOUR PASSION

The word “Passion” in dictionary is defined as “An excitement or uncontrollable desire”. I would say “Passion” is “to LIVE life”. To live passionately is the only justice that we can do to this life. Millions and millions of people spend their entire lives doing the daily routines and chores and they are just surviving not really living. Survival is very difficult, finding out our passion and living the life fully and completely is very simple. It is effortless and enjoyable. There are lesser heartbreaks and health problems and much more prosperity and happiness. The question really is – Why do people just survive?

There are multiple reasons for that.

Children today are brought up with loads of parental and societal expectation. This is particularly true in eastern countries where there is a huge population which is educated and trained to run in the rat race of life. So very less importance is paid to the fact that child is good in arts or sports, and child is pushed again and again to be a part of the rat race.

Parents themselves do not live a passionate life. They are busy 24/7, doing stuff that they are supposed to. They get stuck in the cycle of earning – spending. There are more EMI’s/mortgages to pay off and there is no way to get away from what they are supposed to do. With this kind of lifestyle, there is more and more stress, health issues and relationship problems. In this kind of scenario, the child subconsciously understands as this the only way to live and s/he doesn’t explore the opportunities of living life passionately.

So what do we do about it?

The only way is to get rid of this chain right now. This does not mean that you give up your current job and lifestyle, but it means that start paying more and more attention to your passions. Every person has one or the other passion, but for so many of us it is hidden so deep down inside us that we simply cannot resonate with it anymore.

The very first obstacle to figure out your passion. There is passion test to do this. It is not very tough but you might have to do it multiple times to get to your real passion.

Sit at a place where you won’t be disturbed. Take a paper and a pen. Meditate for a few minutes to get rid of all the pressing issues. Keep your mind completely off any kind of stress. Close your eyes and remember some incidents of your childhood or anytime of your life when you felt that you could do anything and be anyone. Remember the time when there were no restrictions and you got all that you ever wanted. Be in that state for a while. Try to experience that feeling again. Be in that state for a few minutes. Now open your eyes and start the exercise.

Make a table with 4 columns – Priority No., Passion, Score and Vision.

Start listing down something that you really wanted to be in present tense in the passion column. Do not think about how it is going to happen, get rid of all the negative thoughts. Just focus on what is it you really want. For example – If you really wanted to be a singer, write “I am a world famous singer.”

After you are done with writing the first passion, keep thinking and list down 9 more passions. Do the same exercise with each one of them.

Now you have 10 most important passions of your life. On the priority no. column of each one of them, write down a priority number, giving the “1” to the passion that inspires you the most and 10 to the passion that inspires you the least in that list.

So you have your passions right in front of you. The next step is to put the number against each one which states how much of your passion are you living currently. Give “1” to the passion that you feel you are currently living the least and give “10” to the passion that you feel you are currently living the most. This would be the score of that passion.

The next step is to write a vision about this passion. Just imagine that you are currently living that passion of yours. How your life would be? Add specifics to it like how do you feel being in that state? What is your lifestyle like? What kind of people do you meet? What kind of work do you do? Who do you live with? Add as much detail as you can. Close your eyes and imagine all this happening. Write your feelings in a sentence or two.

This gives you the vision on that passion. Be as specific as you can be. Write that vision down.

The following table gives three items from my passion table just for illustration.

We are all healthy, strong and fit. There are 0 health issues, no more than 2-3 hospital visits in a year. All of us get our medical checkup done every year. And there are no long term issues.

This exercise will make you aware of what is it that will really excite you to the core. Scores will tell you how much of it are you living today. And the vision will inspire you to take steps in living that life. What steps to take to make that vision come true will also come while you do this exercise. Most of your question of “How will this happen” will get answered automatically. And the rest you will figure out because that vision will really inspire you. Try this for yourself. It doesn’t take a lot of time and you will benefit a lot from it. Do it every 6 months or so, because sometimes you might feel that you really want to do something but once you get into it, it doesn’t call you any longer. It is good to keep a check on your passions every few months and to revisit the scores to see how well you are living it currently. All the very best!
